Climate Change
9 Planetary Boundaries
Climate Change
Climate change is a long-term change in the average weather patterns that have come to define Earth’s local, regional and global climates.
Nasa 2021 https://climate.nasa.gov/resources/global-warming-vs-climate-change/ Fresh water use
Freshwater is vital for life, supporting ecosystems and human civilizations. We use freshwater in many aspects of daily life including food production, power generation, manufacturing, and sanitation.
National Geographic https://www.nationalgeographic.org/education/freshwater/ Ocean Acidification
Ocean acidification is an increase in the ph levels in the ocean. What this means is the oceans are becoming more acidic. This is happening because humans are increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which eventually gets absorbed into the ocean. The increase of carbon dioxide in the ocean is making the ocean more acidic. As oceans become more acidic dead zones are created which are places where no life can exist.
Plant Based and Flexitarian Diet
A plant-based diet consists of exclusively plant foods, including fruit, vegetables, grains, and legumes, and avoids meat, dairy, and eggs. Plant-based foods are full of fiber, rich in vitamins and minerals, free of cholesterol, and low in calories and saturated fat. Eating a variety of these foods provides all the protein, calcium, and other essential nutrients your body needs. It's important to include a reliable source of vitamin B12 in your diet. You can easily meet your vitamin B12 needs with a daily supplement or fortified foods, such as vitamin B12-fortified breakfast cereals, plant milks, and nutritional yeast.

The Flexitarian Diet is a style of eating that encourages mostly plant-based foods while allowing meat and other animal products in moderation.
https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/flexitarian-diet-guide Novel Entities
“Novel entities” can broadly be defined as “things created and introduced into the environment by human beings that could have disruptive effects on the earth system.” These may include synthetic organic pollutants, radioactive materials, genetically modified organisms, nanomaterials, and/or micro-plastics.
Environmental Law Institute https://www.eli.org/research-report/novel-entities-and-gef-background-paper Stratospheric Ozone Depletion
The stratospheric ozone layer in the atmosphere filters out ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. If this layer decreases, increasing amounts of UV radiation will reach ground level. This can cause a higher incidence of skin cancer in humans as well as damage to terrestrial and marine biological systems.

Land-system Change
Land systems are the result of human interactions with the natural environment and results in loss of biodiversity.
(Science Direct 2015 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2213305415300151) Examples: Forests, grasslands, wetlands and other vegetation types have primarily been converted to agricultural land. (https://www.durham.ca/en/living-here/resources/Documents/EnvironmentalStability/SNC2D_NinePlanetaryBoundaries.pdf) Bio-IntegrityBio integrity is means how well is the biodiversity of an area doing. If there is a huge loss in biodiversity and extinctions are occur then the integrity of the system is low.
Genetic Diversity
All living things on Earth contain a unique code within them, called DNA. DNA is organised into genes, similar to the way letters are organised into words. Genes give our bodies instructions on how to function. However, the exact DNA code is different even between individuals within the same species. We call this genetic diversity. Genetic diversity causes differences in the shape of bird beaks, in the flavours of tomatoes, and even in the colour of your hair! Genetic diversity is important because it gives species a better chance of survival. However, genetic diversity can be lost when populations get smaller and isolated, which decreases a species’ ability to adapt and survive. In this article, we explore the importance of genetic diversity, discuss how it is formed and maintained in wild populations, how it is lost and why that is dangerous, and what we can do to conserve it. https://kids.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/frym.2021.656168 Functional Diversity
Functional diversity is nothing but the way species behave, obtain food, and use an ecosystem’s natural resources. A species-rich ecosystem is presumed to have high functional diversity because many species have many different behaviors. Understanding an ecosystem’s functional diversity can be useful to ecologists trying to conserve or restore damaged it. Knowing species’ actions and roles can point to gaps in a food cycle or ecological niches lacking species. https://ecowowlife.com/what-are-the-types-of-biodiversity-and-why-it-matter-to-us/#Functional_Diversity_8211_Which_Is_Another_New_Types_of_Biodiversity Bio-Geo-chemical flows
The biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen and phosphorus have been radically changed by humans as a result of many industrial and agricultural processes. Nitrogen and phosphorus are both essential elements for plant growth, so fertilizer production and application is the main concern.
Atmospheric Aerosol Loading
Aerosols are minute particles suspended in the atmosphere. When these particles are sufficiently large, we notice their presence as they scatter and absorb sunlight. Their scattering of sunlight can reduce visibility (haze) and redden sunrises and sunsets.
